Morgan Stanley has entered the ether and solana exchange-traded product market, launching two funds on NYSE Arca that expand the firm's digital asset offerings beyond its spot bitcoin trust.
The Morgan Stanley Ethereum Trust (MSSE) and Morgan Stanley Solana Trust (MSOL) track CoinDesk Benchmark indexes and began trading Tuesday. Both products carry a 0.14% expense ratio — the lowest fee structure on the market for crypto exchange-traded products — and will pass staking rewards through to investors rather than retaining them.
Building on Bitcoin Success
The new funds build on the momentum of the Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (MSBT), which debuted earlier this year and had accumulated more than $381 million in assets under management by mid-July. The bitcoin fund tracks the CoinDesk Bitcoin Benchmark Rate, establishing the index provider as Morgan Stanley's preferred benchmark partner across its digital asset lineup.
The expansion reflects a broader trend among large asset managers. Since the introduction of spot bitcoin ETFs in the United States in January 2024, firms have methodically broadened their crypto offerings. Ether products are now well established in the market, and solana has emerged as the next competitive frontier. There are already eight SOL exchange-traded funds listed, with combined net assets of approximately $889 million, according to SoSoValue data.
Amy Oldenburg, head of digital asset strategy at Morgan Stanley, framed the launch as a response to evolving client demand. "Digital assets are becoming an increasingly important component of diversified investment portfolios," she said. "We're focused on providing a range of digital asset solutions that allow investors to diversify across traditional and decentralized asset classes while adhering to Morgan Stanley's standards for governance, infrastructure, and risk management."
The Distribution Advantage
Morgan Stanley enters the market with a distribution network that few competitors can match. Its wealth management division includes roughly 16,000 financial advisors overseeing more than $9 trillion in client assets. The firm's ownership of E*TRADE provides an additional direct channel to millions of self-directed retail investors.
That built-in distribution is significant. The early phase of crypto ETF adoption has been driven heavily by retail and self-directed flows, but the next phase — broader allocation across advised portfolios — requires the kind of institutional infrastructure that Morgan Stanley provides. Financial advisors at major wirehouses control allocations for clients who may never directly engage with crypto exchanges or self-custody solutions.
The 0.14% fee structure is aggressive and positions the funds as cost leaders. For context, the lowest-cost bitcoin ETFs charge around 0.12% to 0.25%, and many ether and solana products carry higher expense ratios. Combined with staking rewards passed through to investors, the economics are designed to be competitive with direct token ownership while eliminating the operational complexity of self-custody.
Competitive Landscape
Morgan Stanley is not alone in pushing deeper into crypto asset management. BlackRock, which operates the largest spot bitcoin ETF by assets, recently introduced its first crypto income ETF, targeting investors seeking steady cash flow alongside Bitcoin exposure. Fidelity, Franklin Templeton, and other major asset managers have similarly expanded their digital product lines.
The differentiator for Morgan Stanley is the combination of low fees, staking yield, and institutional distribution. Whether that package is enough to capture meaningful market share from established crypto ETP issuers will depend on advisor adoption — and on whether ether and solana can sustain investor interest through what remains a volatile market environment.
For now, the message from one of Wall Street's most established names is clear: crypto is no longer a satellite allocation. It is becoming a standard component of diversified portfolios, and the firms that can offer the broadest product lineup at the lowest cost will be positioned to capture the next wave of institutional and advised capital flowing into digital assets.
